M-ATV: MINE-RESISTANT AMBUSH PROTECTED ALL TERRAIN VEHICLE |
9 October
2009
Mine-resistant, ambush-protected all-terrain vehicles arrived
at Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan, on October 1st, 2009 via the
US Air Force.
The M-ATVs, built by Oshkosh, are
the first of their kind in Afghanistan and support small-unit
combat operations in highly restricted rural, mountainous and
urban environments that include mounted patrols,
reconnaissance, security, convoy protection, communications,
command and control and combat service support.
The M-ATV is designed to replace the up-armored Humvee in
Afghanistan. Humvees have proven to be too-lightly armored for
the type of irregular combat as displayed in Iraq and
Afghanistan. And heavily-armored MRAPs, fielded successfully
in Iraq, have proven to be too cumbersome in outlying areas of
Afghanistan. M-ATVs, lighter than heavy MRAPs, have the right mix of agility and armor for the
combat and terrain demands of Afghanistan.
The M-ATV
will carry up to five personnel: four plus a gunner.
An order
for more than 6,600 of the M-ATVs are expected to be fielded
over the next year.
