Large-scale Operation Captures Insurgents in Kirkuk

KIRKUK, Iraq - A combined operation of Iraqi police and coalition forces detained 44 suspected insurgents, May 31, in the Aruba district of Kirkuk city.

Soldiers from the 3rd Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division assisted police officers from the Aruba district in the largest detention operation conducted by the partnered U.S. unit and Kirkuk city police since beginning their partnership in February.

The detainees are suspected of supporting crimes such as high profile terrorist attacks against civilians and IP, extortion, kidnapping and drug sales.

"When terrorists attack an IP checkpoint, target a crowded bus or market, threaten a mosque, or - worst of all - threaten the livelihood of your children by dealing and using illegal drugs, all of Kirkuk suffers," said Lt. Col. Terry Cook, the commander of 3rd Bn. 82nd FA Regt. "These attacks distract the IPs from their most important mission, keeping you and your children safe and investigating crime."
