Argh! US Navy Ship Stops Pirate Attack
USS Peleliu
USS Peleliu
Argh! I served on the Amphibious Assault Ship USS Peleliu as a Marine for six months, and not once did I get to fight pirates. However, that's just what the Peleliu did in the Gulf of Aden about 80 miles north of Somalia on August 8th when it received a distress call from the merchant ship Gem of Kilakarai that it was being attacked by armed pirates in two small boats. The Peleliu changed course to intercept the pirate vessels and launched three helicopters (probably Cobra helicopters) to engage the pirates. The pirate vessels fled the scene. (Source: US Navy)

As the US Navy steps up its operations against pirates and banditry on the open seas, it's looking to unmanned robotic craft to help patrol the wide expanses of ocean. One such vessel being considered is the Protector, an unmanned surface vehicle (USV) equipped with a stabilized gun. See the Protector USV Website for more information.
